Strong Woman Do Bong-soon (힘쎈여자 도봉순)
(2017)
Directed By Lee Hyung-min
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is a silly South Korean romantic comedy. It didn’t get high ratings when it aired, but I do feel like it’s worth checking out.
Do Bong-soon (Park Bo-young) was born with a special power, superhuman strength. Her power is hereditary and it’s only given to the women of her family. Do Bong-soon kept her special gift a secret from her lifelong childhood crush, In Guk-doo (Ji Soo). However, her strength lands her a job at her favorite gaming company, Ainsoft, where she becomes the bodyguard of the CEO, Ahn Min-hyuk (Park Hyung-sik). Ahn Min-hyuk has been receiving anonymous threats and blackmails from someone and so, he requests Bong-soon to help him investigate.
Meanwhile, young women are being kidnapped around Dobong-dong, the area where Bong-soon resides. Bong-soon vows to capture the culprit as he attacked her best friend.
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is a cute drama but disturbing at the same time. The cuteness comes from the adorable relationship between Bong-soon and Ahn Min-hyuk. I have watched another drama with Park Hyung-sik called High Society. In that series, he played a wealthy, arrogant playboy. Yet in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, we see a different side of him: his role is more playful and light-hearted. He is obsessed with video games and may act childish and competitive towards Do Bong-soon, but when it comes to serious issues like his business or solving the crime, he is a leader, calculating and sharp. So far, Park Hyung-sik’s role in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is my favorite of him and I hope he does another similar role like this in the future.
Ahn Min-hyuk’s relationship with Do Bong-soon is so cute and adorable. They would speak to each other in “aegyo” voices and would playfully tease one another. My favorite scenes are actually when they are all romantic and lovey-dovey. Usually, I cringed or cry at those drama scenes, but I feel like they are the definition of cute relationship goals. Park Hyung-sik and Park Bo-young have great chemistry and I really hope that they do another drama together.
As far as the disturbing scenes in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, it is mostly the kidnapping crime that they are trying to solve that is scary because it can actually happen in real life. In this show, the criminal kidnaps young women and keeps them as hostages in order for them to be his brides. It’s pretty sickening and traumatizing but this show balances the seriousness with the light-heartedness. So it’s a drama that crosses genres and people who like action thrillers or romantic comedy can enjoy.
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon crosses gender roles as we see a physically strong and outspoken woman as opposed to the dainty and passive traits we usually see in female roles. Do Bong-soon uses her powers for good and saves everyone: men, women, and children. Even in her relationship with Ahn Min-hyuk, she uses her strength when Min-hyuk is in danger, but at the same time, there is still an air of fragility to her. Despite having a special power, Min-hyuk and In Guk-doo are always concerned that she may get hurt when she plays the hero. Their concern isn’t based on male superiority or masculine pride, but out of genuine care for Do Bong-soon.
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is an underrated kdrama that deserves some more attention. The two leads, Park Hyung-sik and Park Bo-young have great on-screen chemistry. It’s a great show to watch if you want a good laugh.
