Assassination Classroom (暗殺教室, Ansatsu Kyōshitsu)

(Anime 2015-2016)

Studio: Lerche

Created By Yūsei Matsui

I watched this anime out of a whim, but I heard great things about this show from fellow bloggers. So I knew that Assassination Classroom would be good, but what I didn’t expect is that it would be great and I can confidently say it’s now in my Top 10 Favorite Anime (I need to update that list).

Now, I thought this anime was perfect for watching with my sister since it’s set in a classroom and my sister is also a teacher. So, I kind of wanted to see how my sister would react to the alien creature, Koro-Sensei, and the students that are planning to assassinate him. It isn’t school appropriate but rather dark and funny.

The students in the class, 3-E, are tasked to kill their alien teacher, Koro-Sensei, by the government. If they fail to do so, Koro-Sensei will destroy Earth. Along the way, the kids learn some valuable lessons from Koro-Sensei about being good citizens and students.

Assassination Classroom was a series that I wasn’t planning on watching, but I am glad I decided to pick it up. I admit I cried at the end of the series because the last few episodes were a tearjerker because you learn Koro-Sensei’s backstory and you can see how much Koro-Sensei influenced his students’ lives. My sister and I admire Koro-Sensei and Tadaomi Karasuma as they care a lot about their students. Although Koro-Sensei doesn’t look like a human, he does show compassion and sincerity towards humanity. In various episodes, Koro-Sensei not only tests his students on school subjects, he guides them on making good life choices and just being good people in general. In fact, in the last episode, Koro-Sensei makes a yearbook and a “guide to life” manual for each of his students—each book is specifically written for that particular student. My sister said that Koro-Sensei has the ideal teacher persona as he designs tests based on each of his student’s skills and needs—my sister was actually impressed by Koro-Sensei’s dedication to his students in each episode. Learning isn’t just in the classroom but outside of it as well, which is a big part of Koro-Sensei’s teaching philosophy.

I really enjoyed Koro-Sensei’s backstory as he was once a human that has given up on life and dedicated his life to the world of assassins. Yet it is when he transforms into a monster, he learns the value of life and starts using his knowledge and skills to benefit society.

Furthermore, my sister and I found Tadaomi Karasuma and Irina Jelavić’s relationship odd but cute. Our favorite episode is when Karasuma has to rescue Irina and the children from The Reaper. It is in this episode, we see Karasuma and Irina’s relationship develop and also, we finally get to see Karasuma in some serious action. Karasuma and Irina aren’t traditional teachers, but they learn how to be and develop a strong relationship with the students as well.

Assassination Classroom has some great adult humor in it. I didn’t think I would like it, but I actually do. I highly recommend this anime (my sister does too) and you can watch it on Funimation.

5/5

It’s a touching ending. We have all been students and there are a couple of teachers that we respect in our lifetime. So it’s relatable in that sense.

Thought the show was really good. I was a bit let down with the direction that the conclusion took. The ending itself is totally fine, just some of how it got there (I’m sure you know what I mean). Would still recommend the show pretty strongly though myself. Great review, enjoyed it.

Thank you. I think after the final battle, the conclusion could of used a little more work with the students. I agree about that.

Ansatz Kyokai is actually a more fantasy remake of Great Teacher Onizuka. Onizuka is a reformed bosuzoku (biker gang leader and thug) who gets a job as a school teacher. He gets assigned to a classroom full of thugs that have driven off several other teachers and gradually wins the students over. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Teacher_Onizuka AK is derivative, and while enjoyable, your sister will appreciate Onizuka more.
