Watashi no Ookami-kun (私のオオカミくん)

(Manga 2014-2016)

By: Youko Nogiri

This is a short reflection post on a shoujo manga that I managed to have time to read, surprisingly.

Kusonoki Komugi moves to Hokkaido for a year. She becomes acquainted with a group of guys and discovers their secret.

I was mostly interested in this story because of the art. I was somewhat expecting the story to be a bit more dramatic where the main girl struggles to keep the guys’ secret from everyone else and also the possibility that there would be more problems towards Komugi’s relationship with one of the guys, Ookami Yuu.  However, I got a more simplistic story about acceptance of one’s identity.

The main guy, Ookami Yuu is the last wolf in Japan and is also a half human and half wolf breed. He experiences abandonment issues with his mother that passed away, but Kusonoki Komugi helps him gain closure and also expresses unconditional love to him.

This story mainly focuses on Kusonoki Komugi and Ookami Yuu. We rarely get to know the other characters except for Rin Fushimi. Since the focus is only on the two main characters I thought it was unnecessary to have so many extra characters in this story since they are all static and underdeveloped.

Yet despite the lack of character development and the simple story line, it is a good read on the go.

3.8/5
