Warning: Wet Sand is for mature audiences (18+ and over) only.
DOYAK’s Wet Sand Vol 1 is a boys’ love (BL) series that you’ll want to read in private, late at night. The content is too hot and steamy that you wouldn’t want anyone popping up behind you to take a sneak peek at the erotic imagery.
Introducing The Mysterious & Badass Male Leads of Wet Sand

Wet Sand features a sensual and erotic love triangle between three virile and brawny men: Ian, TJ, and Jo. Ian Shin (Shin Youngwoo) is a former member of K35. K35 is a dangerous Asian gang that has formed alliances with other smaller local gangs. The alliance is known as “The Golden Bird.” Ian leaves K35, but he is still associated with them due to his debts and his on-again, off-again romantic relationship with TJ (Oh Taejoon), the second-in-command of K35.
Meanwhile, Joseph “Jo” Landi, a Korean-Italian photographer, becomes intrigued by Ian. Ian lives in the apartment complex across the street from Mia’s Cantina, a restaurant where Jo works. Jo and Ian start hanging out as friends, but it is hinted that there is an unspoken attraction between the two.
Dark Pasts & Sensual Behavior Plagues The Three Men

The first volume introduces the main male leads, with a main focus on Ian Shin. In this volume, we learn about Ian’s past. Ian’s mother neglected him. When Ian was young, he saw his mother unresponsive due to a drug overdose. He called an ambulance, resulting in his mother’s hospitalization and imprisonment. Ian also led a life as an “addict,” but he eventually got clean with the support of TJ.
Readers are given a glimpse into Ian’s past, but his backstory is enough to imply that there are more secrets that he has kept hidden from everyone. As the series progresses, the story will have several dark and twisted turns. TJ’s and Jo’s backstories are not really delved into in this volume, but we can expect them to be revealed later on.
Wet Sand is for mature audiences only. The series has graphic content, exploring the dark world of organized crime, including gang violence, murder, and drug abuse. In addition, this volume explores the erotic nature and sexual relationship between TJ and Ian. The sex scenes are definitely something that grabs readers’ attention. It seems like they are in a situationship or “friends with benefits” relationship, as evident from how the dialogue and images show a physical relationship without emotions. For now, the content of this volume is tame, but we can safely assume that other volumes would be a bit more graphic.
Great Storyline, But Confusing Timelines

My only issue with this series is that there isn’t an omniscient narrator to indicate a change of setting or time. The transitions between some panels were a bit confusing. There was no indication of a shift in the setting, and the dialogue amongst characters did not provide any hints.
For example, there is a scene where we witness an intimate moment between TJ and Ian, and suddenly, there’s a flashback to when Ian was young. The only indication of a flashback is that the panels were formatted onto a black page. It would have been helpful if there were a label or text bubble indicating a time or location for the next scene. It would help give context to readers about the scene.
Wet Sand is DOYAK’s debut series. She is a Korean New Zealander who immigrated to New Zealand as a teenager. Although Wet Sand focuses on crime and underground syndicates, DOYAK also dabbles in the immigration discussion. The main characters come from immigrant families; hence, there are some storylines where characters are navigating their identities and finding a sense of belonging in the environments they are in.
Honestly, I don’t really read crime-themed series, unless it is a true crime documentary on Netflix or YouTube. However, I am intrigued by the Wet Sand characters. The male leads have fascinating dynamics, and I am interested in where they may lead in the future volumes.
