Ageless Love: Thoughts on Witch’s Romance

Witch’s Romance (마녀의 연애)
(2014)
Directed By Lee Jung-hyo
Witch’s Romance is the South Korean remake of a 2009 Taiwanese drama entitled My Queen. I haven’t watched the Taiwanese version and I’m not planning on to since the only reason I watched Witch’s Romance is because of Park Seo-joon.
In this drama, 39-year-old Ban Ji-yeon (Uhm Jung-hwa) is a passionate news reporter for the tabloid magazine, Trouble Maker. She puts all her energy into her professional career and has no time for dating and thus, she is nicknamed “The Witch” by her colleagues. She doesn’t believe in love because her ex-fiance left her at the altar on their wedding day. While Yoon Dong-ha (Park Seo-joon) is a 25-year-old guy that runs a part-time errand company. He’s an optimistic guy but is still deeply hurt by the passing of his ex-girlfriend three years ago. The two end up working together and begin to develop feelings for each other despite their fourteen year age difference.
Witch’s Romance is a fun workplace romantic drama. It breaks the taboo that age doesn’t matter in the world of adult dating. Ban Ji-yeon is a successful career but is under constant pressure from her friends and family to get married already due to her age and her fading looks. This drama emphasizes the importance of marriage to single women as they grow older. There’s some truth to it because once a man or woman gets older, it’s difficult to date. Yet despite this, this drama gives hope to adults that they can find love no matter the circumstances.
Uhm Jung-hwa and Park Seo-joon have great chemistry. I really enjoyed the scenes where they acted like a couple because they get all cute and adorable especially Park Seo-joon. (Those were the moments when my heart melted). My favorite moment in this series was when they both wore pink couple t-shirts and took a picture together. My sister and I kind of wished that Song Ji-hyo played the role of Ban Ji-yeon because she’s a great actress and I think Park Seo-joon and Song Ji-hyo would have great chemistry together too (as from what I’ve seen in a Running Man episode).
Witch’s Romance is a cute rom-com drama that one can watch on his or her downtime. It will make you laugh and feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
