The Way of the Househusband

Kousuke Oono’s The Way of the Househusband is one of the most hilarious slice-of-life, action comedies in recent years for me. Tatsu, also known as the Immortal Dragon, was a former yakuza. He turned his back on crime life to be a loyal and dutiful husband to Miku.

One of the concepts that stood out to me is how yakuza/gang culture can be seen in housewife culture. It kind of got me wondering what is “the way”? What values are instilled in both a yakuza member and a housewife or husband? Let’s take a look to see!

  1. You must protect your turf.

Gang leaders and housewives and husbands are protective of their territory. They don’t want any enemies invading the area where they do their “business” deals. Similarly, a house husband or wife’s territory is the home. They make sure their home is nice and tidy for their loved ones and if there are guests coming in, they make sure to impress.

2. You must be loyal and faithful to your comrades.

Yakuza always remain loyal to their comrades unless you double-cross them. In this series, Tatsu is still loyal to his friends but has turned away from gang life. Instead, you see his friends arguing or dealing with everyday life. For example, when Torajirō needed help running his crepe truck, Tatsu was there to help him. As for a housewife or househusband, they are also loyal to their spouses, and you can see that with the strong relationship, Tatsu has with Miku. He is always there to do the cleaning or run any errands.

3. You must seal a good business deal.

Gang leaders are all about business and making sure they make a profit in the black market. This is no different from a housewife or husband trying to get the best deal on groceries and other household items. Tatsu always is in the know when it comes to the best bargains.

These are just a few commonalities between a gang leader and a domestic partner. Both occupations sure have it tough!
