High School Dating 101: Thoughts on Tsurezure Children

Tsurezure Children was a great show for me to get back into the flow of watching anime. It was adorable and light-hearted, but at times, it was “embarrassing” as well (and I don’t mean that as a bad thing.)

The series focuses on several romantic love stories between high school students. They focus on unrequited love, first-time lovers, and confessions.

My favorite couple in this entire series was Ayaka Kamine and Takeru Gōda. These two are first time lovers and are very shy in expressing their feelings to one another.  Ayaka is pretty bold for a girl that has a demure persona to her and Takeru is a dense and shy guy. I really enjoyed their interactions on the park bench as they were super shy but affectionate towards one another. You can definitely see the sparks fly.

However, the couple that I least like was Chiaki Uchimura and Kana Ījima. Although their comedy antics were fun, Chiaki is a bit immature and isn’t considerate of Kana’s feelings especially when he “joked” about their first kiss, and also when they got into a lover’s quarrel, they were too stubborn to make up. They are the complete opposite of Ayaka and Takeru.

On a side note, though, I couldn’t help but be reminded of myself when seeing some couples, such as Haruhiko Takase and Saki Kanda. These two have a tough time trying to convey their feelings for one another and so when that texting scene happened, I was reminded of the countless failed text messages I sent to my crushes.

Yet, overall, I really like the fact that not everyone got that “solid” happy ending. Some of these characters still have unrequited crushes and others are still at the baby steps before becoming official. I think that adds to the realistic nature in high school romances where not every person is in a happy relationship.

I kind of hope that they make another season of this or else I will have to read the four-panel web series. You can watch the entire series on Crunchyroll.

  1. I’m recently getting back into anime and this is one of the ones I watched so far. I’m a sucker for romance and slice of life so this was a perfect anime for me to back into the groove of things. 😀

  2. I wrote about the first couple of episodes awhile back and wasn’t super impressed. Just finished it last night and, while it did get a bit better, I remained mostly unimpressed by this one. It was just ok for me. Glad you enjoyed it though 🙂

      • I’m in the minority very much here. A lot of people love this one a whole lot. I just didn’t think it innovated enough or connected in any real way with me. Don’t get me wrong, it had some good moments, such as episode 7, but largely just didn’t do enough for me to find it more than average. Like I said though, very glad you enjoyed it 🙂

      • I think it could have been really great if it would have focused on fewer couples. There were just way too many and they didn’t all get proper development. Wouldn’t be a big deal if it was a longer running series or normal length episodes maybe but as is it just wasn’t enough.

  4. You’re right—this could be JUST the show to get back into anime. I also think it’s a good one for newcomers; short, romantic, funny, relatable. Overall pleasant, and makes me smile so hard. This show is life.
