Mako to Aki-chan no Koigokoro is a collection of one shots created by Amu Meguro. The characters are generically drawn, but the story lines are based on themes like unrequited love, first love, and confessions.

The main one shot (which is only two chapters) is “Mako to Aki-chan no Koigokoro.” Mako fell in love with Aki-chan, a popular playboy, due to his kindness towards her. Even though Aki-chan rejects her confessions constantly, Mako is persistent and hopes that Aki-chan will notice her one day.

Now the main concepts that are shown throughout this story are persistence and patience. Mako never gave up on her love for Aki-chan, and she believed that he will like her one day. Persistence and patience are two important traits needed when pursuing a crush. One could agree that these types of action are cute and romantic. However, there is a line that shouldn’t be cross because even though it could be deem romantic, it could also lead to annoying and overly obsessive behavior. A one shot that is similar to this behavior is the story entitled, “Dakedo, Yappari Kawaii Hito.” The main guy, Kanaya, playfully teases the girl he likes Mei-chan, which leads Mei to be annoyed and scared of him. Yet in this case, it works out in the end because the two eventually become a couple.

My favorite one shot in this collection is “Monochrome Doll no Omou toko.” Tasuku Yamashita and Chitose Imai are childhood friends. Tasuku confesses his unrequited love for Chitose, but it turns out that their “love” for each other is different. Tasuku sees Chitose as a girlfriend while Chitose considers Tasuku a really good friend. Chitose tries to tell  him about the misunderstanding, but she eventually finds herself falling for him. I liked this one shot because it is so cute that Chitose compares Tasuku to a happy dog; in which we see drawings of Tasuku with dog ears and a tail. Just by being at her side, Tasuku shows an instant happy expression, and that just makes me go “Aww!”

The one shots of Mako to Aki-chan no Koigokoro are stories that you don’t have to invest too much emotion and time on. It is something to read if you are bored and want to see two people confess their high school love to each other.
